Welcome to the website of the Economics and Environment Network
(EEN) at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. EEN
was set up in 2002 to promote collaboration, integration,
innovation, learning and research in environmental, ecological and
resource economics in the University. In so doing, it contributes to the role of
the ANU Institute for Environment
to connect and support ANU staff and students who work in environment and sustainability.
We achieve our goals by encouraging
and supporting the exchange of information and ideas on these subjects
through seminars, workshops,
teaching, graduate supervision,
working papers
and virtual networking. As a network, we have no view on different
schools of thought or types of specialisation, and our members approach
their work in many different ways.
Our only unifying philosophy is that a sound understanding of economic
principles can often help, and is sometimes crucial, in achieving
more effective protection and management of our environment and
natural resources.
Our members include academic staff and Ph.D students working in
many different parts of the University, who together form the largest
group of researchers in ecological, natural resource and environmental
economics at any university in Australia. They are currently located
in the the Crawford School of Economics and Government, the Fenner School of Environment and Society,
the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, and the School of Economics.
At present, we have no formal role in publishing research or running
degree courses. However, we actively encourage applications to the
ANU
from potential students, but initial enquiries should be directed
to the
course organiser (for Bachelors and Masters degrees, or for the
PhD in
Economics), or to the expected supervisor (for the PhD in Resource
Management and Environmental Science), not to EEN. For further
information on all degrees, visit our courses
page on this website. For
potential supervisors in environmental, ecological and resource
economics, visit our people page
on this website.
A forerunner of EEN and now absorbed into it was the Ecological
Economics Program (EEP). This program was active during 1995-2002 at the Centre for Resource and
Environmental Studies (itself now absorbed into the Fenner School in March 2007), but unlike EEN, was not
university-wide.
People not based at the Australian National University cannot be actual members of EEN,
but we warmly welcome their interest in EEN events. If you would like to be included on
our e-mail list and be informed of EEN seminars, workshops and news, please e-mail the
website coordinator, Jack Pezzey, at jack.pezzeyAT.anu.edu.au.
